Jose A. Lopez Ortega: Portraits of Heroes

Multi-faceted聽artist聽Jose A. Lopez Ortega was born in Puerto Rico but moved to Brooklyn at age 3. After studying at the聽High School聽for Art and聽Design聽and earning his art聽degree聽at the聽Pratt Institute,聽Ortega moved to New Jersey,聽added聽a聽Master鈥檚聽degree聽in education and聽taught art for many years in聽the聽Lakewood, NJ, school聽system.
Looking for a way to help students struggling with problems, he added a Divinity Degree from the New Brunswick Theological Society. The Society commissioned him to illustrate biblical stories, leading to books aimed at the young using formats from Manga-inspired comics to graphic novels.He also has published a richly illustrated play on Puerto Rican history.
Ortega refers to himself as a 鈥減aper artist.鈥 Close examination shows that his聽highly original聽portraits are actually complex collages embellished with painting聽and ink, work聽he describes as 鈥減ieces of a person鈥檚 life.鈥
Ortega聽says he always felt an affinity to the Jewish religion, reaffirmed by the many Jewish teachers who helped him in his early years.聽He聽and his wife attend synagogue regularly. 聽Many of his portraits portray聽the righteous who helped Jews during the Holocaust. 聽Heroic women of the Bible and contemporary women whose accomplishments are not fully appreciated are other frequent subjects.
Ortega鈥檚聽works in the collection of the Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles brought him to the attention of the Heller Museum curator聽and resulted in this exhibition.聽Thanks to his generosity, many of his portraits聽are now in the Heller Museum鈥檚 permanent collection.
